上富良野の4、5月はホップが芽吹き始める季節。-20℃の冬を耐え、ホップや他の植物もこの時を待ちに待ったと言わんばかりに活発になります。農家の方々も毎日トラクターに乗り、忙しそうです。僕たち人間もどこか気持ちが上向きになっている気がします。

コロナで世界経済はストップしていますが、ホップの成長は待ってくれません。この2週間程度で膝上くらいまで伸びてきました。

雪が溶け、ホップが芽吹き始めると同時に誘引するための誘導線を張る作業もお手伝いさせてもらいました。6月中には全長5mに達します。

農家によって張り方は異なりますが、僕らのブルワリーが契約しているホップファームの誘導線の張り方はニュージーランドとほとんど同じ。ニュージーランドでは1ヶ月かかりましたが、こちらでは4日程度でこの作業は終了。

繰り返しますが、このようにホップの成長は待ってくれません。コロナの影響で多大な損害が出ているクラフトビール業界。飲食店が苦しい状況になり、ブルワリーが苦しい状況になる。この状態が続けば、ゆくゆくは生産活動が止められないビールの原料を作っている農家に対して、ボディブローのようにダメージは多かれ少なかれあると思います。幸いにもホップは他の作物とは違い、保存がまだ効くので、その影響はわかりませんが、彼らにも経済的なダメージがない事はないと思います。

The way of straining the guide wire is different from farm to farm. In our contracted hop farm, it is same way as New Zealand. It took a month in New Zealand, but about 4 days in Kamifurano.

I want to say again. Hops can’t stop growing for us. The craft beer industry has suffered a great deal of damage due to the effects of corona. The restaurants and bars face a critical situation and breweries as well. If this situation continues, I think farmer will get big damage because they can’t stop to product. Fortunately, hops are preserved better than other crops. So I don’t know the results, but I think there will be some economic damage.
